Autumn Sunrise Hat
Autumn Sunrise Hat
This is one of the simplest hats I have ever knitted! It's a double-layered hat, so it is very warm and cozy. I sewed a pom pom to it, however it does not need one, if you prefer. Pom poms with attached elastic can be buttoned on as well, for easy removal for washing your hat.
What you need:
16" circular knitting needles, size 4.5 mm or 5mm
Tapestry Needle, Stitch Marker, , and a pair of scissors.
2 skeins of any #4 Medium Worsted Weight yarn.
For the hat shown, I used one ball of Red Heart Soft, in the color Mandarin, and one ball of Lion Brand Landscapes, in the color, Volcano.
These are both 100% Acrylic Yarns, so they are safe for Charity knitting.
Gauge: 21 stitches and 26 rows = 4" swatch, with 4.5 mm needles and #4 Worsted Weight Yarn
Pattern:
Casting On:
I used the long tail method, and made sure there was plenty of yarn left as a tail in order to sew up the edge. [About 12 inches.]
Child: cast on 54 stitches.
Adult, small size: cast on 96 stitches [as shown above in the photo].
For the next size up, cast on 108 stitches.
Join, making sure the foundation row is not twisted. You will be knitting a total of 140 rows.
For the two-color Pattern shown above:
1. Knit 50 rows with the main color, if you are making a two color hat. [Of course, you can be as creative as you like. A Fair Isle Pattern would be lovely with this hat also.]
2. Change to accent color, and knit 40 rows.
3. Change again to the main color and knit 50 rows.
Option shown in the Photo: I knitted this hat until there were 15 rows remaining, and added the accent color for the top also. I still had plenty of accent color yarn left over.
In retrospect, it was more difficult to close the top of the hat with the Landscape yarn because it is a roving yarn and breaks easily.
Finishing:
Cut the yarn, leaving a long enough tail to sew up the edge, and to weave in the ends -- about 12 inches or more if you are using a roving style yarn, just in case.
Using a tapestry or darning needle, thread this yarn tail onto the needle, and remove the stitches from the knitting needle onto the tapestry needle, drawing the yarn through every stitch until all the stitches are off the knitting needle.
Now, carefully pull the yarn tight, closing the hole at the top of the hat. Sew it together on the inside.
Next, using the yarn tail from the foundation row, do the same thing on that end of the hat, by threading the tail into the tapestry needle, and weaving the yarn through every other stitch.
Carefully pull the thread tight in order to close the hole of the bottom of the hat. Sew it together, Make several knots and put the yarn needle through to the inside. Poke it through somewhere farther down the hat, to the outside, to pull the needle out again and hide the tail on the inside.
Now, take one end and push it "inside" the hat to connect it with the top, and sew the two ends together. Attach a Faux Fur Pom Pom to the top if you like and enjoy, or pass on the blessing to someone else.

Matching Scarf Idea: Cast on 54 Stitches
Just keep knitting this "tube" to match the hat pattern.
If you choose a Fair Isle Pattern, all the floats and yarn ends will be on the inside. Knit until it is about 60 inches in length for an adult. [Adjust for alternate sizes to the height of the individual.]
Sew up the edges, as was done for the hat, and add a Pom Pom to both ends, if you like.
