Knitted Socks Pattern

Knitted Socks : Small Adult - 9” Foot [Make 2}



Materials: 


1 skein (357 yards/100 gm) Knit Picks Hawthorne Hand Painted Fingering Weight (#1) Sock Yarn, in the color "Mt Tabor"; 80% Superwash Fine Highland Wool, 20% Polyamide]

2.25mm double pointed needles

Tapestry needle for weaving in ends


Abbreviations:


k = knit

p = purl

ssk = Slip 2 stitches as if to knit, then knit them together

P2tog = purl 2 together


Cuff:


Cast on 64 stitches, dividing the stitches onto three needles: 

16, 16, [for needles 2 and 3] and 32 stitches for needle 1 [the instep]; join.


Work in k2, p2, ribbing for 1 1/2 inches


Work stockinette stitch [knit every round] until sock measures 6” from beginning, or desired length, ending with needle 1.


Heel Flap [Just above the Heel of the Sock]


Work on the 32 stitches of needle 1 only

Row 1: [RS] *Slip 1, k1; repeat from * across

Row 2: [WS] Slip 1, purl 31

Repeat rows 1 and 2 — 14 more times


Heel Turn [Heel of the Sock]


Row 1: Slip 1, k17, [ssk] k1, turn

Row 2: Slip 1, p5, p2tog, p1, turn

Row 3: Slip 1, knit to 1 stitch before the gap, ssk, k1, turn

Row 4: Slip 1, purl to 1 stitch before the gap, p2tog, p1, turn


Continue working back and forth in rows, working one more knit or purl stitch, between the slip stitch and decrease, on each row until all stitches are used, ending with p2tog, turn, and knit across heel stitches. 


Gusset [Side of the Foot - ankle area]


Round 1: Using the needle holding the heel stitches just worked:


Pick up a stitch in each of the 16 slipped stitches along the edge of the Heel Flap [needle 1]. 


With a new needle, knit across the 16 instep stitches held on the next needle. 


With the same needle, knit across 16 instep stitches held on the next needle.


With new needle, pick up the 16 slip stitches along other edge of Heel Flap, and with the same needle knit across 10 stitches of needle 1. 

[You should have 84 stitches = [26 stitches on needles 1 and 3, and 32 stitches on the instep needle 2] — (The Instep is the top of the foot)


Round 2: Knit each stitch around


Round 3: 

Needle 1: knit to last 3 stitches on needle 1, k2tog, k1 [25 sts]

Needle 2: knit across needle 2 [32 sts]

Needle 3: k1, ssk, knit remaining stitches on needle 3 [25 sts]

[You should have 82 stitches]


Repeat Rounds 2 and 3 until 16 stitches remain on needles 1 and 3; [64 stitches total].


Foot

Work even in Stockinette Stitch until foot measures 7”, or 2” less than desired length to end of foot. If your foot measures longer or shorter than 9”, adjust length here. 


Toe:

Round 1: 

Needle 1: knit to last 3 stitches on needle 1, k2tog, k1

Needle 2: k1, ssk, knit to last 3 stitches, k2tog, k1

Needle 3: knit across

[60 sts; 15 sts on needles 1 and 3, 30 sts on instep needle 2]


Round 2: knit around all stitches


Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until 5 stitches remain on needles 1 and 3, and 10 sts remain on instep needle 2; knit across needle 1.


Finishing:

Cut yarn, leaving a 24” length; thread yarn end onto a tapestry needle and weave through live stitches on all three needles. Slide stitches from needle; pull yarn end and close opening. Weave end through gathered stitches and knot securely. Pull yarn to inside sock and weave end in, or graft toe opening using Kitchener stitch.
